Sunday School at St Andrew's, Ham
St Andrew's Sunday School is a lively and thriving group of children, leaders and helpers. We take children from the age of three - parents are encouraged to come along with the littlest children while they get used to the routine. The children are taught in five different age groups - one pre-school, one for reception class children, another for Year 1 and 2 children while the two groups for Key Stage Two (junior) children consist of Years 3 and 4 together and Years 5 and 6 children.
All meet in church on Sunday mornings at the beginning of the 10.15 service and after a short talk directed at the children, we leave for the hall. After a prayer we move into groups for the day's lesson and activities. Each group leader follows the Scripture Union "Light" material. This means that each group works on the same theme but at varying levels of difficulty.
Each session usually consists of an introductory activity, a Bible story and then a related activity that is often either art or craft work. The eldest children are often involved in more challenging discussion and how to apply what has been learned to their own lives. Most groups have a different leader and assistant on each Sunday of the month.
About forty minutes after entering the hall, we assemble once more, do some singing together and then have a drink and biscuit. Parents then arrive from church to collect their children.
The children are encouraged to help at the all age services that are usually held on the first Sunday of each month when there is no Sunday School. Throughout the year there are events for the children and their families - sports and barbecue, a family fun evening, a barn dance etc.
When the children leave primary school, it is also time for them to move on from Sunday School to our Fish group, by which time we hope they will have a faith to build on and to support and sustain them during their lives.
